Modern Dating Text Patterns

A glossary of the most common toxic and confusing behaviors found in modern digital dating.

The Slow Fade

Definition: A gradual reduction in communication frequency and quality. Instead of breaking up, the person slowly withdraws attention hoping you will "take the hint."

Signals: Shorter replies, longer wait times, stops asking questions.

Breadcrumbing

Definition: Giving just enough attention to keep you "on the hook" without any intention of committing. Often manifests as random likes, vague "miss you" texts, or memes sent after weeks of silence.

Signals: "Thinking of you", reacts to IG stories, but never initiates plans.

The Orbit

Definition: When someone stops texting you (ghosts) but continues to "orbit" your social media life by watching every story or liking posts. It is a low-effort way to maintain presence without intimacy.

Signals: Ghosts on text, active on Instagram.
